History of Virginia Equine, PLLC

In the 1980, veterinarians Stan Goodell and Chris Parcell left Woodside Equine Clinic and started Virginia Equine Associates. Dr. Parcell left in 1981 to complete a residency at The University of California, and shortly after Dr. Goodell received an offer to join a friend in a practice in Texas .

Dr. Tom Newton and his wife, Jennifer, bought Virginia Equine Associates in December of 1981. The practice was renamed as Virginia Equine Clinic since Dr. Newton had no associate. The Newtons rented a house on Kain Rd in Short Pump for two years, as Dr. Newton wanted to be more available to the Deep Run area where he was focusing his practice’s work.  They operated their business out of this house and built two stalls with some wooden stocks in an old chicken house that was behind their home/office.

Later, the Newtons purchased a home off of Manakin Road in Manakin-Sabot; again, they both lived on the premises and also utilized it as an office for their business.  When Little Hawk Farm became for sale in Goochland County , Tom and Jennifer purchased the facility.  They still live and work there today.

In the meantime, Dr Olive Britt, the founder of Woodside Equine Clinic, was in a serious car accident in 1992 and could not practice for about a year. During her time of incapacitation/recuperation, Dr. Newton helped her with her clients and took her on calls with him when she was able to travel. Once she was able to practice again, Drs. Britt and Newton joined forces and practiced together under the name of Virginia Equine Clinic.

Dr. Daniels was hired as an associate in 1994.  Upon his employment with the clinic, he was waiting to sit for his Virginia Board Examinations and was hence not yet licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.   His conditional license stated that he had to practice under the direct supervision of another licensed veterinarian; for this reason, Dr. Daniels was assigned to accompany the brilliant Dr. Britt.  This team-up proved to be a Godsend for a young veterinarian in a new area.

Four years after his initial employment with Virginia Equine Clinic, Dr. Daniels purchased the practice.  The office and clinic remained at Little Hawk for the first year of new ownership, but when Deep Run Hunt Club’s property became available in 1999, the decision was made to move the clinic and office to Manakin-Sabot.  A new clinic barn was constructed, and many improvements were made to the property in order to provide the best quality care for patients and clients (please see ‘Tour of our Facility’ page for pictures of the property, fencing, and barn with its amenities).  The practice is now known as Virginia Equine, PLLC.
